Learning OS

Cookies and storage

This page lists everything Learning OS stores on your device. It is a short list, and all of it is our own — nothing here belongs to an advertiser or an analytics company.

Last updated 8 October 2026.

Why there is no cookie banner

Because there is nothing to consent to. Learning OS carries no advertising, no analytics service, no tracking pixels and no third-party cookies. What it stores is either needed to keep you signed in or a preference you set yourself.

A banner asking permission for tracking that does not exist would be worse than no banner: most of the people using this product are students, and training them to click through notices without reading makes the consent that genuinely matters — such as whether the AI tutor may be used at all — mean less.

Keeping you signed in

Session cookies. When you sign in, our authentication provider sets a cookie holding your session, and a second one used to renew it. They are how the product knows who you are from one page to the next.

These cannot be switched off while you are signed in — without them there is no session. Signing out clears them, and so does clearing site data in your browser.

Preferences stored on your device

Four small values are kept in your browser’s own storage. None of them leaves your device, none is sent to us, and none is shared between devices or with anyone else:

  • whether you chose the light or dark appearance;
  • whether you asked for numeric values to be hidden, which is an accessibility and study preference;
  • small conveniences for the study companion, such as which side of the screen it sits on;
  • a short-lived note, lasting only until the tab closes, that keeps keyboard focus in the right place while an administrator moves between pages.

You can clear all of these at any time by clearing site data in your browser. The product keeps working; it simply forgets your preferences.

Fonts, and what that means for your IP address

The typefaces are served from our own domain rather than fetched from a font service while you read. That is deliberate: it means your browser makes no request to a third party for them, so no font provider learns your IP address from using Learning OS.

Two things that are not storage, but do send data

Neither of these stores anything on your device, and both only happen when you choose to use them — but both send something away from it, so they belong on this page.

Dictation. If you use the microphone button to speak instead of typing, your browser does the listening, not us. Depending on which browser you use, that can mean your voice is sent to the browser maker’s own service — Google’s or Apple’s — to be turned into text. The audio never reaches Learning OS, and we have no agreement with those companies covering it. If you would rather it did not happen, type instead; and an institution can ask us to turn the feature off for its students.

Camera. If you photograph your working so the tutor can see where you got stuck, the picture is sent to our server and on to the AI provider that reads it. We do not save the photograph. What the provider keeps is explained in the privacy page.

If this changes

If we ever add an analytics or advertising service, this page will say so before it starts, and we will revisit whether consent is needed rather than assuming it is not. For students under 18 we would treat anything of that kind especially cautiously, and some of it is restricted by law.

Contact, and how to raise a concern

Contact the school, college or institute that created your account. They hold your records and can act on a request about them directly.

Signed in? You can see what we hold, correct what is yours to correct, and raise a formal request from the privacy section of your account.
